About me

Julie McHugh Psychotherapist & Counseller Berkhamstead

I provide Psychotherapy and Counselling in Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead & London

I am an experienced psychotherapist and counsellor, accredited with UKCP.  Before training in psychotherapy I worked in education for many years as a nursery nurse, a secondary school teacher and then as a special needs teacher for children with severe learning difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.  An interest in personal development and my own life journey led me to find a better way to cope with life's challenges and eventually to psychotherapy.

l trained in Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling at CCPE, London.  I have worked with people of all ages, from adolescence through to old age and worked as an Honorary Psychologist in an NHS mental health unit in London.

The way I work

A key factor in successful psychotherapy or counselling is the  relationship between therapist and client.  In an initial session there will be space to talk about what brings you to therapy and I will ask some questions.  From then you will decide whether it feels right and comfortable for you to continue for more sessions.

I will provide a space of caring, compassion, understanding and empathy.  Together, and at your pace we will explore what's happening now and in the past and begin to see where patterns or habits may be holding you back in life or causing you to repeatedly get the same outcome that does not serve you.

With awareness and insight you can begin to change and to resolve the problems that brought you to therapy.  I can support you in this work but more than that enable you to develop your own qualities that will help you support yourself in the future with whatever challenges life delivers.

I work integratively so use a range of modalities including psychodynamic, humanistic, person centred and transpersonal.  At times I work creatively using art, bodywork, visualisation and dream work. However sometimes it may be simply enough for you to be properly heard and be able to speak your truth fully for the first time.
